When it’s cold outside it can feel even more challenging to find ways to fill your time.
Despite how it may feel, winter will end, and you can enjoy the sunshine again. But until then, we have a few suggestions for what you can do.
1. If you’re craving a cold-weather feast
Some foods are just made for cold-weather days.
From creamy hot chocolate, cookies, and pies to chili, mulled wine, and a big bowl of soup. Staying indoors feels a lot better when you can be indoors with a delicious feast. So why not treat yourself?
Whether you’re teaching yourself to make your winter favorites or just putting in more time to indulge, now is the perfect time to do it. Blast your favorite music and have fun cooking up a storm! It’s an added bonus that your home will smell as delicious as your food once you’re done.
Another reason this is a great activity? It can lead to more activities, like getting your loved ones together for a potluck or festive meal. You can also instate a festive happy hour every wintry day you spend indoors and treat everyone at home to their drink of choice, from cocktails to hot chocolate.
2. If you’re feeling crafty
Spending time indoors can leave you longing to get creative and make something with your hands. If this sounds like you then why not lean into it and make something you can keep forever?
Our favorite way to get crafty in the cold months is with an activity that’s cozy. Like scrapbooking or knitting.
Scrapbooking is a great way to spend your time, especially if you’re always feeling nostalgic and love storing sentimental trinkets and taking photographs. It’s also easy to organize because all you really need to get started is an empty book. Another bonus? This can help you sort through the box of photographs you’ve been putting off forever.
Knitting can also be a satisfying activity that leads to great gift-giving and cozy accessories you can add to your wardrobe or around your home.
3. If you can’t stop thinking about outdoor
activities
Bring outdoor activities indoors. Easier said than done? Not at all.
Indoor camping and indoor picnics can be just as fun as heading outdoors (it’s also much more comfortable on winter days). This is a great way to put down your phone and electronics and just spend time with your loved ones on a winter day.
If you’re a camper, then clear some space in your home to set up your tent. Then, make it cozy with pillows, blankets, snacks, and any other activities you would do if you were in the great outdoors. This activity is also a perfect excuse to make smores! So, it’s a win-win-win.
More of a picnic person? You don’t need to give up your favorite activity until sunny weather comes along! Just clear some floor space, spread out your blanket, pack a basket, and enjoy your feast in the warmth of your home without needing to bundle up for the outdoors.
4. If you have a competitive streak
Game nights are the perfect way to get competitive and have fun even while you stay warm indoors. You can put together a marathon games night session with family or friends by asking every guest to bring their own game.
This also means that every time enthusiasm lessens for a particular game, you can just swap it out for the next one!
You can also get creative with the games you play. Traditional board games like Clue and Monopoly are reliable, but you can also include drinking games, customized trivia nights, or even a spirited round of 20 questions. It all depends on your mood.
If you prefer a more laidback activity that you can do yourself, jigsaw puzzles can be a fun and challenging way to spend your time.
5. If you want to feel cozy
Is your favorite way to spend wintry days in bed feeling as cozy as possible? Then why not turn it into an activity?
Let the inner child in you (or your kids) out to build a blanket fort with cozy duvets, cushions, and pillows. The living room, or anywhere in front of a TV is a great place to position your fort so you can also host movie marathons from this cozy spot.
Get extra cozy by making it a pajama day. Pajama days mean you, and the whole family, get to spend the day in your most comfortable pajama sets. So, get dressed in your best pajamas, snuggle up in the blanket fort with plenty of snacks and warm mugs of cocoa, and make the most of the weather with winter movies, playlists, or even a good book.
6. If you’re getting bored with your home
When you’re feeling cooped up indoors it’s natural to feel bored with your surroundings. But thankfully, there’s an easy fix.
Just a little rearranging can transform your space for the better. If you took our previous suggestions for things you can do at home, then you may already have an indoor fort set up in your living area. This definitely makes your space feel cozier, which is perfect for the wintry weather outside. But if you want to keep the feel of a blanket fort without the inconvenience, then try changing up the fabrications decorating your home this winter.
Instead of light linens and bright colors, switch to knitted pieces, deep colors, and fuzzy textures.
Another great way to get organized and pass the time is by donating/getting rid of the things you’ve been meaning to. From your wardrobe to your broom closet, head into the new year a little lighter by shedding all the things you don’t need.
And there you have it! 6 ways to spend your time indoors on wintry days.
