So lovely to chat with you, Romy! Tell us a little bit about yourself…
Romy: I’ve been modeling since 2014. I live in Miami, Florida and I’m a size 16/18 depending on the brand. I got my start modelling in Montreal, Canada where I had a very successful run and have since relocated to Miami where I’m represented by Dorothy Combs Models.
This was my first time walking in Miami Swim Week. I was supposed to walk last year but had a foot injury so instead I was in the audience cheering my friends on while wearing a walking boot.
What was your experience walking Miami Swim Week as a plus size model?
Romy: It was really fun. You feel vulnerable putting yourself out there as a model but many of the designers are smaller brands and you realize how vulnerable they feel putting their work out there and you just want to do your best for them to feel good about their show.
What was the most challenging thing about doing the show?
Romy: Dealing with the heat! It’s hard to feel fresh and fierce when it’s 100 degrees outside and your makeup and hair is sweating off.
What was the most exciting thing about doing the show?
Romy: The energy of the crowd. I noticed both years that plus size models have a tendency to bring out a little extra buzz out of people. The energy was high.
What kind of swimsuit trends did you see?
Romy: Vibrant colors and funky designs. The opposite of the Tulum vibe. Lots of orange, pink, deep blue and interesting cuts.
Is there anything in particular that you’ll be taking away from this experience?
Romy: Absolutely, I learned that your footwear choice determines the quality of your experience on the runway.
If someone was struggling with their confidence or body image in a swimsuit, what advice would you give them?
Romy: For me the key to confidence is focusing on being your best self, whatever that means. It takes a lot of energy to sit in the shame of comparing yourself to others. It’s better to focus on being the best version of yourself. It doesn’t matter if your life looks good if your daily life doesn’t feel good so do what makes you feel good.
What’s your favorite style of swimsuit?
Romy: Brazilian bikini haha. Since I went to Rio in 2018, I haven’t worn much else. My mom likes to tell me that it doesn’t leave much to the imagination.
What’s your favorite summer activity?
Romy: Outdoor cycling and going to the beach.
Additional insights you’d like to share?
Romy: Just have fun and don’t take yourself too seriously. Also, wear shoes that don’t flop around while you walk!
